Our PSHE curriculum is enquiry based, fully inclusive and meets the needs of all learners, starting from building strong foundations in our EYFS, supporting and challenging them on their journey to being secondary ready, and ultimately ensuring that they are equipped with the cultural capital, skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the future.

Early Learning Goals
Communication and Language
Children at the expected level of development will:
- Hold conversation when engaged in back-and-forth exchanges with their teachers and peers.
- Express their ideas and feelings about their experiences using full sentences, including us of past, present and future tenses and making use of conjunction, with modelling and support from their teacher.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children at the expected level of development will:
- Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others, and begin to regulate their behaviour accordingly.
- Set and work towards simple goals, being able to wait for what they want and control their immediate impulses when appropriate.
- Give focused attention to what the teacher says, responding appropriately even when engaged in activity, and show an ability to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions.

PSHE National Curriculum Aims
In line with our Jigsaw Program of study, there are some core themes that link to KS1 and KS2. These are the three core themes:
Health and Wellbeing
- What is meant by a healthy lifestyle.
- How to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing.
- How to manage risks to physical and emotional health and wellbeing.
- Ways of keeping physically and emotionally safe.
- How to manage change, including puberty, transition and loss.
- How to make informed choices about health and wellbeing, and where to get help with this.
- How to respond in an emergency.
- To identify different influences on health and wellbeing.
Relationships
- How to develop and maintain a variety of relationships, within a range of social and cultural contexts.
- How to recognise and manage emotions within relationships.
- How to respond to risky or negative relationships, including bullying and abuse.
- How to respond to risky or negative relationships and ask for help.

Living in the Wider World: economic wellbeing and being a responsible citizen.

PSHE Intent
Our vision for PSHE is to enable all pupils to flourish in the world around them. We endeavour to ensure that all pupils have a range of social skills and interpersonal skills that will help them to succeed in life as well as being positive citizens.
All pupils are equipped with skills to support and enhance a healthy lifestyle as well as having a healthy mind-set.
We believe that a broad and balanced PSHE education is the entitlement of all pupils, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability. It is our vision that all pupils during their journey will display our key values at Biggin Hill Primary Academy. Which are:

PSHE Implementation
Weekly Jigsaw lessons are taught discretely throughout the school to give depth and breadth to the curriculum area.
The Jigsaw scheme of learning, which includes statutory Relationships and Health Education (England), in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work. This comprehensive programme gives children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.
The 6 Jigsaw Puzzles (half-termly units) are designed so the whole school can study the same learning themes at the same time, each year group at its own level. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental throughout each academic year. Pupils will learn about the following: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me.
From the beginning, our PSHE Jigsaw curriculum contributes to: Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Understanding the World. This can be evidenced by children playing co-operatively, taking turns with others in ‘Making Relationships’. In ‘Self-confidence and Self – awareness,’ we encourage children to become confident to speak in a familiar group and try new activities. In ‘Managing Feelings and Behaviour,’ we help children to talk about how they and others show feelings and work as part of a group and class.
The teaching of PSHE at Biggin Hill Primary Academy is carefully designed, planned and implemented through Jigsaw to ensure that all pupils are challenged to fulfil their potential. PSHE lessons are rich in resources, vocabulary, questioning and content enabling all children to be resilient and to understand how to keep themselves safe and happy in their world leading to a successful future.
Lessons have a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, the Jigsaw resources allow teachers at Biggin Hill Primary Academy to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. PSHE lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

The impact of the PSHE curriculum can be evidenced in various ways. Such as social skills, personal skills, respect towards others and themselves, as well as their ability to live in the ever changing world around them.
The school leadership team, subject leaders and governors relentlessly drive the PSHE curriculum forward and monitor it vigorously.
